On board of the steamer Charmer. Cairo, Ills. 29 August 1864
To his Excellency Gov'. Rich'. Yates, Springfield
Governor:
I have the honor to report, that I had a conversation on board of this boat with Mr. M Hunter, the former mayor of Shawneetown, whom I Know to be a reliable union man, he Mr. Hunter told me that Mr. Beck the present mayor of Shawneetown, has distributed muskets about 100 stands indiscriminately among men and boys in town and country. Those muskets were send down upon a requisition by Col Rhodes. Mr. Hunter thinks, better have no arms at all, than to have them in possession of irresponsible parties. - I will take the liberty to instruct and request Mr. Ridgeway, to distribute the Rifles and ammunition with care only to good and reliable union men. - The boat is shaking so much that I can not write any better. -
