With James Hart Purday letter 9/17/64 With D. Billartin letter 9/17/64
Vicksburg Aug 30th 1864
Col J. S. Loomis
Dear Sir
Allow me to introduce to you my friend James H. Purdy. Mr. Purdy is an Ex Major of the 59th N.Y. Vol. and visits Illinois, and other Northern States, for the purpose of seeing the Governors of the same in relation to the new composing the late Miss. Marine Brigade. The Brigade, as I suppose you already know, was lately disbanded by the order of Genrl Canby and the men transfered, some of them, back to their Regiments, while the remainder were organised into an entirely new command. A majority I understand have served out their three years. But some officer in authority has decided that they were discharged from their old regiments when transfered, and that they must serve three years from the time they were mustered with the Marine Brigade. Such a procedure has caused great dissatisfaction among them, and they are almost in a state of mutiny. There are many Illinoisians among them and if this
matter is permitted to pass unnoticed, and the men to remain where they are, you will loose many a good soldier that would go to make up your future quotas, and many a good loyal voter at the coming election.
Major P. visits Springfield on behalf of these men and desires to lay the matter before Governor Yates. Any favors you can show him will be truly appreciated by
Your Sincere Friend
