Moline Ill. Sept 11/61
Hon Richard Yates
Gov. Of Ills.
Dr Sir:
I was among the first I think to tender a Cavalry Co. in this state. Not being accepted I took my Co. to Kansas to join [illegible] Brigade, & was sent to Missouri where I have been in active service for a month past, at Lexington. My Co. which is one of the finest & best equipped in the U. S. Service has never yet been attached to a Regiment = I was last week elected Lieut Col. of a Missouri Regiment, which position I accepted conditionally. Before giving a final decision I wish to offer my services to the Executive of my own state, under whose auspices I had rather battle than those of another [commenweath?]. I would gladly accept the same position in a Cavalry Regiment from your hands & would, if this should meet with favorable consideration like to have my Co. transferred to the same Regiment. My preference would be either the Regmts of Col Farnsworth or Brackett. - As I have, without solicitation, been tendered the position named, in Mo., my desire to serve my adopted State of Illinois is all that
induces me to make this tender -
As my furlough is short I trust this may receive an early consideration
Yrs Respectfully
R. G. Graham
