Dear Sir

I recd a note from you sometime since which on acct of its insulting character I did not answer.

I now learn through Robert Kirkham that you were under the impression that I had interfered to have Col Sloo appointed over you. Now whoever so informed you stated an infamous falsehood--He got the appointment without my aid and in fact without my knowledge--for I did not know he was even an applicant.
