Paris, Ills. December 3rd, 1861.
Hon. Richard Yates,
My Dear Sir:
My prospects are good for a position in the Army, in a few days. Col. Harris has offered me the position of surgeon in his Regiment. I feel very certain that Col. Alexander will do so, if he has not made already, some other arrangement.
I feel satisfied, that you will do me any favor in your power, if these arrangements should in any way fail. I would simply remark, that I know of no one, who has done as much work for the Republican Party as I have, who has not asked, and generally received, some lucrative position either from the General or State Government. I can console myself at any rate with the promise, (not found in the Bible,) "Blessed are they that don't expect much, for they shall not be disappointed."
I am, Dear Sir
Your Obt. Servt.
