Gov R Yates
Respected Sir
I am no alarmist but since the leading tories of this State have held their treasonable meetings at Springfield the secessionists in these parts have become bold & more [impertinent?] than ever and dark hints are thrown out as to what they will do. In my opinion all that there wicked bad men want is the [toscin?] summer by their leaders, and an indiscriminate slaughter would take place of all the leading Union men throughout Southern Illinois. I have talked with many Union men in this vicinity - and they all take the same
view of matters as I do & honestly think there is mischief brewing. Would it not be well enough to take things in time there is no better point than this [place?] a [illegible[] at [illegible] for a Regt or so to be stationed. The RR as would be the first thing the secessionists would be likely to attack & tear up. Another thing we have no army in this county. Not enough can be [illegible] for even a company. Could not a small [det?] be shipped down in a quiet manner to our P.M. W Edwards Esq he is a true man & would act with discretion. I may be mistaken in all this thing but I see too many signs to be far wrong. If we have
to fight here in Ills in defence of our homes our wives and our children we want to be ready and by the help of God we will endeavor to make short work of it. The wicked & abominable speeches of O. Melverry of this co - has done a great deal of mischief. Can nothing be done with such men who get up before a large assemblage & defy the government & call for dissolving our connexion with the New England States? God help us, and help the nation, and may God give you strength to maintain your ground and enable you to put a quietus upon the treason men hatching in this
State.
Truly yours L Nowland
For any information that you may want at any time drop a line to our venerable P M - W Edwards and it will be attended to promptly.

Strong secession feeling in that county. Secessionists threaten revolution. Apprehensive of an outbreak. Wants arms, also a regiment to guard the Rail Road.
