Provost Marshals Office
Camp Butler, February 3d 1865
Hon Richard Yates
U. S. Senator elect.
Jacksonville Ill
Sir
Being introduced to your Honor, by my friend Simon Hishback, your former A D C and Private Secretary and recommended to you by Lorenz Brentano of the Ill Staatszeitung (German Newspaper) of which I was Local Editor I beg leave to ask a great favor from you.
Since August 1864 I am employed as Chief Clerk of the Provost Marshal of Camp Butler Ill, beeing Private of the 31st Ill Infty on detached Service. -
As the 10 new Organization Regiments are rapidly filling up, I suppose that there is a good chance to get a Lieutenancy in one of this Regiments.
I am not acquainted with Gov Oglesby or the new Adjt Genl and therefore beg you to give me a recommendation or a letter of introduction to the new Governor.
Besides Mr. L. Brentano, I refer to Lieut Gov. Hoffman, who knows me well since six years as well as to Major Heffernan and Capt Putnam Field, Provost Marshal Camp Butler.
Please favor me with a soon answer and receive the assurance of my highest Respects.
Your obdt Sevt
Morris Langeloth
