With Richard Yates letter 1/18/65 (with this letter also petition from friends recommending G. P. Smith 12/1/64; also endorsement from R. J. Oglesby 1/23/65. Jacksonville, Ill. Feb. 15th 1865
Hon R. Yates:-
My Dear Sir.-
Enclosed please find the recommendations refered to in our last interview. I am led to believe that the President has not yet approved the appointment made by the Secretary of the Treasury, of Collector of Customs for Port Townsend, W. T., or that the Senate has failed to confirm. Should this be the case, there may still be an opening in the Collectorship, and it might be secured for me. If not, I leave it with you to do the best for me you can. Chief Justice Chase, and Wm. H. Wallace, Delegate from Idaho, and Hon. E.C. Ingersall, will cheerfully cooperate with you.
Be pleased to accept my kindest regards, and believe me most respectfully, &c
G. P. Smith
