Head Quarters District of Illinois,
Springfield, Ill, Feb'y 22nd 1865.
Hon. Rich. Yates
Washington D.C.
Dear Gov.
In addition to the
annual celebration of this the birth day of the
immortal Washington by direction of the Secy.
of War a National Salute was fired in honor
of the reinstatement of our national colors
upon the battlements of "Fort Sumpter". The
inhabitants of our patriotic Capitol were
almost wild with enthusiasm. Colors every
where flying, bands playing, and artillery
soaring, all proclaiming the gallant deeds
of our conquering army, as it progresses towards
the complete restoration of all that the truly
loyal heart holds dear. Charleston: the foul
nest of treason, the very beginning of all our
sorrows is at last ours. God grant
that as treason found in that acursed
city - [its?] [cradle?] it may too, then find
its eternal tomb "buried forever from our
sight" all honor to the gallant Grant
and Sherman!
Since your departure [but?] little of interest
has transpired. recruiting has slackened
but little and there is every prospect that
we will be able to fill our quota with but
little trouble. the news from Sherman will
accelerate matters greatly - all are buoyant
with hope that the "end is near ".
I have as yet failed to hear whether my leave
and permission to visit Washington has been
favorably acted upon. I hope you will
not forget the interview had with you prior
to your departure and your promise to see Mr.
Lincoln personally in regard to the matter -- I see
by todays papers that McArthur has been breveted
a Maj. Gen. I am the last of Fort Donelson pro-
motions without brevet rank - wont the President
treat me as he has the balance & hoping to hear
from you immediately - with the deepest gratitude
for the past I am your
devoted servant Cook
