I have rather a large and expensive family to support, and I cannot well afford to lay idle all summer and the condition that my eyes are in it is not desirable that I should be in the field paying in the bright sun down south & this weakness has been [accentured?] by the Smal Pox that I caught last Spring while [paying?] Hospitals. I have never asked to be favored before and here been in the Service now two years, and since I have been so low that my Dr said that I could not get up, but I did & returned and then diseazes were contracted in the Service and while I was on duty and [accentured?] by it.
There are three Paymasters at Chicago Major J H [Kensey?] Nelson and some other person but who I am not advised, the Paymaster who was last sent does not reside there as I understand it or near there.
If you can get me so transfered I shall feel under deep obligations to you, I do not, & shall not ask Mr Farnsworth to do this thing for me I do not know as he would if I should and I shall not place myself under obligations to him and then I shall be at liberty to support who I please for our next member, and I do not wish to ask Mr Trumbell as it is possible if I live I may be in the next Legislature and I do not wish to be (illegible).
I write this fully to you [believing?] you to be my friend as I am & have been & ever hope to be yours.
Your friend & Obt Servt

Wants to be transferred from Cairo to Chicago. Will not apply to Farnsworth because he will not commit himself in advance as to the next member from that District
