Peoria, Ill. January 20 1865
Hon. Richard Yates
I presume you have entirely forgotten me, But you will perhaps remember my being in Springfield about the time you organized the Reg. for State service. I called upon you for an appointment in that Reg., bearing recomendations from John Durham & Hon. E. C. Ingersoll. My object in writing to you at the present is this, The People are very anxious to Raise a Reg. in our City. We are situated in the Center of the State, And have every thing requisite,so that it will cost the state nothing, Except transportation. Our Barracks are quite sufficient and in good condition.
[Hundred?] of Men will enlist in a Regiment Quartered at Peoria that would not go in isolated squads to Springfield or Quincy. We ask it as a special favor, that you
use your influence with the Governor, in our behalf. We will hold a meeting tomorrow evening, to solicit the Governor for permission to form a Reg. here. We can facilitate the organization of the Regiments very much by organizing one of them here, men very much prefer home companies.
I have your promise since last fall to assist me at the first opportunity offering. We can see no objection to this arrangement, have the kindness to give it a favorable consideration, And oblidge a host of Friends
Your obt. servant
