Hon. A. Lincoln
Prest. U.S.
Dear Sir
Col. G. P. Smith of Jacksonville is an applicant for the office of Collector of Customs at Port Townsend in Washington Territory.
Col Smith was in the Army for some time & left on account of sickness - for the last year he has been at home & has done valuable service in stirring up a loyal spirit among the people. He made the canvas last fall for the senate in his district and our friends are much indebted to him for the energy & enthusiasm with which he conducted the Campaign. I hope he may receive the appointment desired. Yours truly
S.M. Cullom
From an acquaintance with Col Smith of several years I cheerfully endorse the within recommendation believing that should he receive the appointment he will make an efficient officer giving satisfaction to the Government and people I trust he may succeed in his application [FM?] Wallace
I am well acquainted with Col Smith and most heartily and fully concur in recommending him for the position named - He is eminently fit for the place. E C Ingersoll
