Monmouth, Ill. Jany 24/65
Hon Richd Yates
U. S. Senator Elect
Dear Friend- Some time Since I sent my application for appointmt of Pay Master to the President accompanied with recommendations from yourself, Genl Harding, and Judge Lawrence and have not heard any thing from the same. Will you be so kind as to take my application in hand and if possible procure me the appointment. And in case there are not any vacancies in that Department I will leave it discretionary to you to make application for
me for any other appointment in any department under Government You may deem me capable and worthy to hold
Illness of my wife alone kept me from being at Springfield at time of Senatorial contest but as Martin & Simpson stood up to their promises to me previously made, my presence probably could not have done you any good.
Allow me at this late hour to congratulate you upon your success but be assured the result was most gratifying to almost every Union man in this county
With many wishes for your health & happiness I am
Your Friend Solon Burroughs
