Dear Sir
Doctor W S. Wright a cousin of mine joined the Rebel Army in 1861. Went South leaving his child a little boy in Jackson Co Mo. In the winter of 62-3 that County was devastated. The fiercest and most deadly conflicts occurred there. Dr W advised of this came to St Louis Feby 63 to recover his boy- He was captured-then-and has now been for nearly 2 years confined in prison.
His offense of coming into our lines is a gross one - but what Father will fail to appreciate the motive that prompted him to come- I have assurances
on which I rely implicitly that he has in sentiment and feeling wholly and unequivocally abandoned the Rebellion and [repented?] his false step.
Upon this state of fact I respectfully request that you see President Lincoln and request his release.
The Confederacy is falling to pieces - our flag is everywhere victorious- Mr Lincoln Can afford to be generous
Here with I enclose letter from Maj Gen Prentiss and one from Brig Genl Copeland officers in Charge of Alton Prison
If upon the case as presented you make full [illegible] in aiding in Securing the release of Dr Wright I shall be gratified. and he will
long remember and highly appreciate your Kindness
I have the honor to be Sir Respectfully Truly Yours
