Quincy, Jany31/65
Hon Richard Yates:
Senator from Illinois:
Dr. Sir:
I understand that George S. Bangs, of Aurora, is an applicant for the office of Marshal of the District of Columbia. I have known Mr. Bangs for a long time, and am gratified to hear that you are friendly to his appointment. He would make a good officer, and I think his appointment would be popular in the State. At his request, I have written to Senator Howe, of Wisconsin, on his behalf, and suggested to him an interview with you on the subject. If you succeed in securing the appointment for Mr. Bangs, I will sustain it unreservedly in the Whig and Republican.
Yours truly,
Cha's Holt
