Mason City, Sept 16, 1861
His Excellency Gov. Yates:
Sir - My object in addressing you is to obtain an interview preparatory to an appointment in the Illinois volunteers. There are reasons why I have not already entered the service in some company from this neighborhood, which could be better explained in person than by letter. Mason county has sent a goodly number of men into the field and it would certainly be no more than justice to give her a representation among the field or staff officers. If your appointments were confined exclusively to regularly educated military men, I could not hope to obtain favor, as my military experience is limited to a few years drill in the N. Y. militia; but if civilians who can furnish the most unexceptionable references for private character, together
with a firm and steady purpose to defend the honor and integrity of their country in every event, can stand any chance, I think I may at least obtain an interview. What I lack in the theory of military knowledge, I think can be readily acquired by dilligent study, especially when the school furnishes such abundant opportunities for practical application. Should you wish further information in regard to me I would say that I have been a resident of this state about ten years, am a native of Sag Harbor, N.Y., and son of the late Col. H. W. Hunt, of some military reputation. I would refer you to Rev. John Andrews of the Presbyterian church of Mason City, Rev. G. W. Patterson, 2d Pres church, Chicago, Mr. Geo. Straut, Peoria, or if time would permit you to make inquiry to Col Rose, 16th N.Y., or any of the prominent citizens where I have formerly resided. Hoping that this may elicit a reply, I remain
Your ob't serv't
Kosciusko C. Hunt
P.S. - I will meet you at Springfield or elsewhere at any time, as you may direct, but hope the time will not be long postponed.
Yours,
K.C. Hunt
