2nd Brig. 1st Div. [4th?] A.C.
Near Nashville May 23rd
Dear Gov.
I was informed yester-
day that I have been recommen-
ded by my Division Corps and
Army Commanders for Brig.
Gen. and have just been fur-
nished with the enclosed from
Gen. Kimball. Had I been
consulted I should have sug-
gested that the letter be sent
you instead of Gov. O for the
reason that I have just or
rather recently learned that
Gov. O. does not rate me
among his particular po-
litical friends for what reason
I do not know. I have never
sought the promotion suggested
nor allowed the circulution
of a recommendation among
my fellow officers. I have been
content to know that my services
have been appreciated by the
Gallant Gentlemen who have
commanded our Division
Corps and Dept. I confess it
would be gratifying to receive
the promotion to a full
Brig. Gen. and now that
I have been recommended
officially. I do not hesitate
to write you in this subject
Two officers in this Div, both
my juniors, living in
Washburn's Dist. have been
promoted. They were for
Washburn for senator and
I presume he felt it his
duty to help his friends.
They are both gallant officers.
I send you the Original
of the letter sent to Gov. O.
in the hand writing of
Maj. Gen. Kimball. If
an opportunity should occur
to advance my interests
in the manner suggested
by Gen. K. I am sure you
will do it.
Very truly
Your friend
