Washington May 26th 1865 My Dear Sir The friends of Mr Field the apistant Secy of the Treasury have presented his name to the President for an appointment to Europe: and if you can give me a letter to the President writing in that matter, you will do me a great personal favor. Field is a gentleman in every sense of the word: a fine linguist a ripe scholar has traveled much in Europe is well acquainted with many of the leading men there and with their diplomacy and will no doubt render good service there. ever truly yours, John Wilson Hon R Yates Jacksonville Illinois sent letter June 4, 1865
