PAY DEPARTMENT, U.S.A.

POST OF NEW ALBANY, IND. May 27 1865

Hon Richard Yates

Senator from Illinois.

Dear Sir; --

I am truly much obliged to you for your efforts in my behalf; your kindness will be remembered by me and by my friends. I rejoice that you have received such a gratifying testimonial from your honor friends: in feeling I fully participate in the sentiments expressed and wish I could have been present. Before such offerings as these, fragrant with the incense of the heart devotion of old and tried friends, even public honors pale and loose their lustro.

It may be that there are no vacancies just now in the Regular Army: if ----

not a promotion to Brevet Lt. Col, which has been made in several cases in our department would affect the same thing, and I think would be better. This is practicable I know.

Anything you may do Governor, will be most gratefully remembered by me and also appreciated by my family.

Respectfully Yours

Geo. Phelps ----
