Cincinnati, O, June 5th, 1865
Hon. Richard Yates, U.S.S. Jacksonville, Ill.
Dear Governor:
Your communication of the 21st of May has just reached me. 'Twas delayed in consequence of my absence from Washington on Inspection duty; have been absent for the last six weeks.
I expect to return in about two days when I will give the matter spoken of in your letter prompt attention. I have no doubt of final success though I shall have to personally invite the Secretary's attention to the matter as everything which can be done, in Noble's behalf has already been done in the Quartermaster Generals Office.
I am much obliged for the document you enclosed. Your
reception at home is but an indication of the manner in which you will be received everywhere, in the hearts of the people, when you shall go among them.
I would like to write you more at length but am very busy with my Inspection Reports.
I return the communication from Mr. Noble, as requested.
When will you be in Washington? I passed through Jacksonville last week and had I known you were there I would have stopped off.
Very truly Your friend and obedient servant
Geo. C. Rutherford
Col Hopkins sends his best respects to you. Says he keeps
your pictures hanging in his office to remind him of his Illinois friends.
Yours G
