Wilmington Delaware June 20, 1865 His Excellency Ex Gov R. Yates Jacksonville Ills Dear Sir I am visiting at this place but leave tomorrow for Illinois your engagements at Chicago were so prepping just when the generals arrived and whilst I was in Chicago lately that I did not see you a second time. Will you add to the many favors confessed by endorsing an application I have made for an orphan son of my late Fathers, by his second marriage as an applicant for a berth in the Naval Academy of U.S. at Annapolis Md other letters with mine will be sent to the President. Robert Grimshaw the young lad is 15 years of age, born in Pennsylvania near Philadelphia resides now
at Wilmington Delaware, is well educated has learned mathematics & French and is an intelligent boy. Delaware is peculiarly situated as to her [Congressional?] Representation and they have no influence. For myself and family I have asked no favors of the government of the United States. This boy is [from his half brothers?] by his Mother was lost as masters mate in 1863, supposed to be killed from [but repel?] by rebels at Horn Island Gap Alabama he was the support of the mother of Robert.
