Hon. Richard Gates
Dear Sir
Edmund Miller Esqr,
who has resided in our town several
years as principal of our Acadamy and
formerly connected with the Lutheran
College at Springfield, wishes to go on
a visit to his native state Virginia.
He has been informed that his fathers estate
has been [wor??ed] up since the rebellion and
that his portion of the estate has been con-
fiscated by the rebel government on acct
of his residence north. Now I want you
to give him a letter to Gov. Pierpoint or "to
all whom it may concern" that Mr Miller
is all right. I presume you may have
some acquaintance with him- if not, you
can safely say that his integrity and loyalty
are above suspiciion. Your friend
