Columbus, O, July 15 1865,
Hon. Richard Yates,
Springfield, Ill.
Dear Sir,
You know something of my labors for the west in exposing domestic traitors. State offices in Indiana and Ohio & Senator Lane & Sherman have united in asking for me a Brevet in the regular army in which for four years I have been and am now a Colonel, for service at the west the last three years. My arrest of Constable in your state was one of the first steps to quiet Eastern Illinois. If you feel that my labor also benefitted Illinois, can you give me a letter to the President uniting in the request. It is a formal recognition of my labor merely; but they had their value as null or labor in the field. My address for a week will be this city.
Very respectfully & Truly Yours
