U. S. Mustering and Disbursing Office,

Springfield, Illinois.

July 25, 1865.

Dear Governor:

My position here will not be of

very long duration, and I am now beginning

to look around for another and more permanent

one and it would no doubt be of considerable

benefit to me to have your influence in that

direction. I would therefore request that if it is

consistent with your inclinations, you send me

a letter of Recommendation to aid me in obtaining

such situation. I dont know exactly where I shall

apply for it but shall endeavor to get a place, or at least

a man to work for who suits me better than where I am now.

Hoping to hear from you soon I am, with respects

to Mrs. Gates and your family

Very truly

Your Obedient Serv't

J. W. Porter
