Alton July 26 1865
Gov. Yates
Sir:----
Your letter enquiring after Mrs Samuel McBurrows is before me. I find her here in the circumstances she represents in her letter to you----(here with return.) She is both worthy and capable: and it is one of those cases which will justify an especial action. I will join in the request that you, if possible, obtain a place for her. She will go to Clinton, Dewitt Co. Ills in a few days. Should you succeed in her behalf, you can address me here or her as above care Thos. [Kirker?]
Governor, there is a matter that the "boys" of the 144th Ills Regt. desire you to look after. This Regt's time was not quite out, not by about two months. It has been so managed that they were mustered out and paid only $66.00 bounty instead of $100.00. We know of no good reason for this; the St. Louis Gov't officers cannot tell. Robt. Smith of Alton, a Paymaster, does not believe it is just. These boys are from every part of Madison [Jersey?] and (illegible) Counties, and they feel this injustice VERY SHARPLY. I cannot think the Gov't sanctions it, or would do so if the case was represented; and if a fraud it should be exposed. I am requested to present you with a statement of the facts in their case to the end that justice may be [regarded?] them. Will you give them your attention in this matter?
_____
If so, I will make a short detailed statement for your use. Truly Your friend H. G. McPike
