Jacksonville Ills. Aug. 5.1865 Hon. E. M. Stanton Sec. of War Dear Sir. A Mr Alexander Miller is under arrest for the cir- culation of some postal currency. I am not acquainted with the facts, but from the very high character of Mr Miller I am sure there must be some- thing wrong in the arrest. He is a man of wealth and influence - a most active and liberal supporter of our Union Cause. Unless there is proof of his guilt I sincerely hope that you will order Mr Bass, The U.S. Dist Atty at Chicago to enter a Noll Pros in his case - Very Respectfully Rich Yates

[illegible] Recommendation for release of Miller - Hop- kins' friend
