Jacksonville Ills Aug.18,1865 Dear Derrick I have just recd-. your letter with accompanying letter of Chas M Claran Esq. I think the case presented by you and Mr-M.C a fair one. I think, indeed, that it is the right and the polite view for the government to take of it but still I am not over sanguine of success. There is, however "nothing like trying" and certainly nothing gained worth trying without trying, and I have concluded to go and try. I regret to feel it my duty to myself that ---- to say that I must look to you for expenses of journey without reference to results-for I had no intention of going to Wash'n before meeting of Congress and nothing to call me there, and feel the necessity of economy just now-Please write me on this point. Also please say whether I am to go to the extent if necessary of giving one or more persons equal interests, with ourselves, and whether upon the same terms as myself which I understand to be ----that I am not to advance any capital or to be responsible for [illegible] or expenses over & above proceeds and profits. I have at least one man in view whom I may find it necessary to interest but whom I am sure would require some such terms-Please if all right telegraph me and also write by mail. If you telegraph all right as per this letter I will set about to go immediately but will wait your letter before starting. Your friend Rich.d Yates ---- Copy to D. A. [Ganury?]
