ASSISTANT ASSESSOR'S OFFICE, United State Internal Revenue, !st Division, 13th District, Illinois.
Tamaroa Perry Co Aug 18 1865
Hon. Rich Yates Jacksonville Ill. Dear Sir, Yours of 15 is just see. I enclose herewith a list, as requested of Union Men that would I think make good use of such documents as you may [front] to them - With a little more time I can + will if wished make a list more fully extended - + one including some of those who yet claim to be "Good Democrats", as [ever].
Your friend truly
L.S. Norton
Personal
An effort has been made to have D.C.Barber Il. S. assessor of this District removed - it was favored by the present Rep. ( Kerry Mendale) from this District - because (it was said) that Barber was not for him for nomination after "K." was nominated. I know that every nerve was strained to elect him as successor - More I believe that it would not be best to make any
change - least of all such a change as was proposed The effort was made by a few as I understand prompted by personal feelings toward Barber for having so fully abandoned some of his old associations. And dislike of the close organization of the Il. S. A. that I have been instrumental in establishing - in other words they hated me because they could not use me and Barber because we would not either of us go for any thing like compromise with "Democracy" even when christened "Man" - that effort failed - it will probably be renewed again during the fall or winter. I hope your influence will be against it. But if Mr. Barbers removal is determined upon by the powers that be, may I ask that you urge my name for appointment to the place as his successor. As 1st asst. I have been conversant with the duties of the office from the beginning. My health has been such for 2 or 3 years that I can attend personally to all the details as well as general supervision of the office - of fitness cc you can judge - With highest regards, as ever yours L.S.Norton
