with James B. Steedman letter 8/21/61
with paper commissioning Frank W. Marion as Second Lieut.
Head Quarters
Camp Butler
September 25 1861
Sir,
This will introduce to you my friend Lieut. Francis N. Marion who is desirous of being appointed as Adjutant of Col Williams' Regiment of Sharpshooters.
Lieut Marion has been highly recommended to the Governor for the position of 3d Major in the Cavalry Reg't of which W P Kellogg is Colonel by Lt Col's Price and McGrillis, but I believe he would prefer the position of Adjutant. He was five years in the regular service and three months a Lieut of Ohio Volunteers in Western Virginia, is a finely drilled officer and will be recommended by Col Pitcher as one of the best instructors now in this camp.
I am satisfied that he will prove a valuable acquisition to any regiment with which he may become connected and will esteem it as an Especial favor if you will use your influence with Col Williams to have him appointed.
very respectfully
Your obdt servt
