Excerpt from minute of meeting of the town council of the royal burgh of Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, dated May 10, 1865.
“The council record that, in common with the whole community, they have heard of the death, by assassination, of the President of the United States, with feelings of abhorrence of the crime, and profound sympathy for the people of the United States in the calamity which they have sustained; and they express their deepest sympathy with Mrs Lincoln and the family of the deceased President, in the bereavement which they now mourn.”
