At a meeting of the council of the mayor, aldermen and burgesses of the borough of Yeovil, in the county of Somerset, held at the Town Hall on the 1st day of May, 1865—present, the worshipful the mayor in the chair—it was
Unanimously resolved, That the council desire to unite in the general expression of deep sorrow and indignation excited throughout the kingdom by the foul assassination of the President of the United States of America, and most respectfully tender to the government and people of that nation, as well as to the widow and family of the late President, an assurance of the sincere sympathy of the council in the unprecedented calamity which has befallen them.
And further, that the town clerk do transmit a copy of the foregoing resolution to his excellency the United States minister in London.
