Galesburg Sept 29th 1861
Gov Richd Yates
Dear Sir
Allow me to tresspass on your patience to the extent of requesting a personal favor.
I know & think I appreciate to some extent at least the agrevation and vexation attending the constant application of individuals for every appointment within your gift. And have resolved that I will not be persuaded to ask of you another similar favor.
Dr. J. W. Tuttle is a large stout healthy man of good habits & practical ability
My Family Physician and every other Physician of our place express the utmost confidence in him as a practical Surgeon
I saw him at a Coroners inquest over a Body killed in drunken [Shelaly?] fight. And to all appearances he was fully adequate to conduct the examination & give a minute detailed account of cause & effect.
The Dr. desires to go into active service. Wants an oportunity not only to dress the Limbs of Wounded Soldiers.
but if opportunity presents to try the effect of cold lead on some Reble.
Clark. E. Carr says his Bro Col. E. Carr would be glad to have Dr. Tuttle appointed Surgeon of his Reg but he had determined not to ask "or recomend another person to the Gov" for App" in his Reg"
Doct Tuttile is not particular what Reg. you assign him, except he desires to see Active Service.
He was a Douglas man during the Campaign, is now & has been constantly a strong War Man. Sustains the Administration & all military Authoritys at all hazards untill impeached, & is a fast Freind to yourself
I trust you will find it consistent to give him the appointment of Surgeon in some Reg" that is likely to see Active Service. And by so doing you will confer a special Personal favor on Your old and
True Freind
Geo I. Bergen
