Urbana Sept 30 61
Hon Richd Yates
Dr Sir
I see through the Columns of the Tribune that a registry of those killed in the present war is about to be established in connection somewhere with the army. I do not know whether it is true & especially does it partake of doubt having come from the papers -- If it be, so that there is a place & a duty of that kind established outside of existing offices I hope to be able to obtain a place of that kind -- I know it is an important object for after statistical history but it may be superadded to the duties of some other officer I have no idea when would be the appointing power whether in the Executive of States - in the offices of Brigades - or by the Sec of War -- I am ignorant on that subject & find no one here who knows any more than myself I impose upon you for information first because you are better informed & second I may prize too highly the Slight acquaintance I had with you at Mr Boydens in the last Campaign -- If such a place opens I feel
I can do it justice & can give references which I think will be satisfactory to that effect -- Please answer & oblige Respfully
