To the honorable Richd Yates

Gov of the State of Illinois

Sir I drop your honor a few lines to inform you to an application that maid for me to the officers of the 56th Reg of Illinois vols when from some cause I did not get my commission as 2nd Lieutenant of Co A of the afforesaid Reg after receiving the appointment from the hand Col Kirkman and rendering Service as Sutch for the Space of Two months and ten days. When A. E. Wallbright was commissioned in my Sted The application was made by the Commissioners of officers the Regt all of them that was in the Regt assigned it. It now remains on file in your office. I now ask your honor to grant me Chief Martials position in the Ninth district of the State for the purpose of leaveying the draft a like in all political parties without favor or affection. I am no politition but a Soldier of the mexican Ware and was one of Wm. H. Bissels 2nd. Ills. Reg I am now a private of Co A of the 56th and wishes to reman in the Survice of my Country untill this rebellion is put down by the force of our arms but I now am not able to Stande a camp life or climate of the South. I have spent at least three hundred dollars and enlisted over two hundred recruits for the Sirvice Sence the ware broke out an has never got anything but the monthly wages of a private. Though honorable if I do not soon get eleaved from the ranks it will take my life and Starve my Wife and Children to death as I am not in good health & at this time. If any refrence bea required futher than the Recommendation it can be furnished to your entire Satisfaction as I am well Known through out the Ninth Congressional Districk. I am on my way to goin my Regt from the recruiting Sirvice I will leave a letter from your honor in this to reminde you that I have bein in the Survice all the time and Some of the time on my own hook-
