                                                 Marshall Ill.
                                                   March 16th - 1863

Sir.

From other sources you are no doubt fully informed of the late events here & of the arrest of Judge Constable - The Democrats say that if another arrest is made it will be resisted and that had they known that Constable was to have been arrested, they would have resisted even the 350 U.S. Soldiers who came for that purpose - That they are arming & in Some parts of the county Drilling is certainly true - that when they heard the troops near another (illegible) to this place, Messengers were dispatched to give the alarm and that their men turned out as (Started?) with their arms in hand for this place & equally true. But before they got here in the night they learned that the soldiers and the

Judge had gone. They were too late - Had they had timely notice a conflict must have followed. The fear is that when there should be another arrest. The enemy would visit their Residences an the unarmed union men who reside here. I have all this from the leaders. I do not repeat the thousand wild names as threats of the rank & file of the Democracy - Robinson, Scholfield, Young and others are desirous to avoid collision but smaller leaders like (Dacyherts?) the member of the Legislature, are more violent and say openly that the (illegible) Act will & shall be resisted - For that it would be dangerous

I fear in our unprotected state to make an other arrest- How this is to end I cannot say - All good men of both parties are now alarmed - I enclose you a paper from him here as the anger of the party - you can judge of it's tone - To me it lessons to be a refrain to the harassment - He desires to want to be arrested & open that event to enmity on the crisis - And yet I would advise not to arrest him as matters now are - It is to be hoped that time cool them off. I fear not - I have deemed it my duty to apprise you of the existing state of things - with 24 hours notice they can bring 2000 armed men to this place - Yours Truly Gov. R. Yates
