W. P. Carlin to Richard Yates

                      In Camp near Murfreesboro, Tenn

                                          Jan 28th 1863

My dear Governor:

                   As the result of your recommendation for Brigadier General, united to that of General's  Mitchell, (McClellen?) Rosecrans and Halleck and all the officers of my command.  I was informed yesterday that my promotion was objected to by the Chief Magistrate "on political grounds it is supposed!"  If I have any political principles that prevent my promotion they should also prevent me from remaining in the Army and from holding the position I have held since you honored me with the command of a Regiment.  Though I feel doubly outraged by such a decision on such grounds,  I shall never cease to be grateful to you - the only Illinois statesman who had ever recognized me as an Illinoisan - for your assistance - and for your patriotic and impartial course during the war - and for your efforts in behalf of our brave boys who have endured the hardships of war and pound out their blood for the safety of our Country and the honor of our state.
