Quincy Oct 9. 1861

To his Ex. Gov Yates.

Dr Sir.

The bearer WM H. Bennison Esq. Of Quincy is desirous of entering the army & visits you in relation to an appointment.

Mr B. is an old resident of Quincy & one of its best citizens an energetic, honest man & one who is entering the army has no [ends?] to answer but to serve his country. He has been for several years connected with the military organizations of the city, and is now Captain of the Horse Guards and in military knowledge

is well qualified.

I confess myself much gratified at Mr B's determination as I believe him to be of that class of man the country now most urgently needs in her service.

I beg most confidently & warmly to recommend him to you for an appointment as Col. of Infantry or Cavalry feeling the fullest assurance that he will always prove “the right man in the right place”

May I ask this also as a personal favor to

Most respectfully

Your Obt. Servt.

B M Prentiss

Brig Genl

Dear Governor

I have known Mr Bennison for many years, intimately, and well. Our City contains no better or truer man, nor one whose honor may be more fully trusted.

I know nothing of his qualifications or attainments, but presume Genl Prentiss does, and I cheerfully and cordially unite in his recommendation; and shall be glad to see Mr Benneson's wishes gratified. Truly yours

O.H. Browning
