Springfield October 9th 1861

To His Excellency

Gov Yates: The two cavelry companies attached to the 36th (Fox River) Regiment are now at Camp Benton, St. Louis. the Infantry Companies of the Regiment are at Rolla. The cavelry companies are in want of say forty overcoats each making eighty. They have no Jackets. There is no immediate or prospective hope that they can be furnished these articles by Gen. Fremont. Can your department furnish these articles to them? Upon my return home I will leave with you a requisition from the Colonel & Quartermaster for them. These companies are liable to be ordered to the field at any day & if they go without their overcoats & jackets they will be likely to suffer.

Respectfully Yours
