Chicago, Dec 11th 1863
Dear Governor
Dear Sir
Your favor of the enclosure as stated is received we have this day recvd the check of A.B. Taylor agent enclosed in your letter amting to 10,000 The more effective to protect your interest we have had the check Protested - as Matters now stand we could not pay the check nor place it to your Credit - for we have been served with a written notice forbidding us from doing so - we shall hold the funds and refuse all checks of Taylor untill this Matter is settled - we shall be very happy to do all in our power to protect you - but under the Circumstances could not in our own responsibility
from the best legal advice we cannot - we think there can be no doubt but you have a lien on the deposit to the amt of 10,000 dollars - it may be nessay for you to instituce a suit against us - I think however when Taylor finds he is in a trap he will consent that we pay the check to you -
Yr Truly
