Hon Richard Yates
Dear Sir:
Your favor, addressed to me, of the 16th and 22d just, were duly received, and should have been answered ere this, and would have been, but for the unfortunate habit that has grown upon me of neglecting such courtesies. Your explanation of Mr. Snyder's letter,- which I thought uncalled for in its tone under the circumstances, - is perfectly satisfactory. Knowing Mr. Snyder slightly, I did not think that he would be guilty of intended offense; but supposed he labored under a misapprehension as to the purport of Mr. (Willerton's?) letter. I do assure you that I have nothing but the kindliest feelings and highest respect for Gov. Yates; and in I am quite sure that these feelings are shared by the proprietors of the Tribune. He has made a record at which I think no just man or true
patriot can find fault. And when the history of this mad rebellion is written, there will be no fairer page - none which will read better - than that which records the part that Richard Yates bore in its suppression. Even did I think myself wronged - which is not the fact -I could not set down ought in malice against him. Be assured of my highest esteem. The letter on the subject of the education of soldiers orphans, enclosed in your last, will be published the moment the crowd upon our columns will permit: and any thing you may hereafter send will be readily inserted, of course taking its chances with any delay that the crowd upon our columns may render necessary.
Very Truly

I have written the above letter in my own name, because you have addressed me personally. The letter written by myself to you was done at the request of Mr. (Willerton?). Of course you understand that I am not a proprietor of the Tribune, but simply act the part of an assistant editor, presently corresponding in the name of the Tribune at the request of its proprietors. I say this to prevent any apprehension on your part that I control it's columns, beyond the necessity of my position.
