Dear Governor.
After repeated interviews I found Dickey's position to be this. He had refused to commence against you from kindly feeling, but had kept Taylor from going to any one else until he could see me. Taylor was not willing to confer upon him power to settle beyond a certain limit; and up to this point he was willing to go. After finding that I could do no better and after consulting with Farrell, I concluded to close the matter by dividing taking $5 and giving $5. I did not like to do it, but upon the whole I thought it all things considered best. Herewithe I send you the $5. And your letter
Yours Truly
