The song sheet also quotes Major General Ambrose Burnside's complimentary remarks about McClellan after Burnside's assumption of command of the Army of the Potomac.

President Lincoln relieved McClellan of command after the general failed to pursue General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, following the Battle of Antietam.
