Description
Mining and Sapping under the Citadel, Confederate fortifications, at Port Hudson, Louisiana. The terms "mining" and "sapping" refer to military siege tactics, in which soldiers dig trenches and tunnels to reach fortifications and then use explosives to destroy the structure. The Siege of Port Hudson took place between May 21 and July 9, 1863, corresponding with the Siege of Vicksburg. After the Confederates lost at Vicksburg, they surrendered at Port Hudson, despite their successful defense, giving the Union control of the Mississippi River.
