Camp Near Rossville Geo march 16th 1864 To His Excellency Hon Richard Yates
Gov State of Illinois Freind Dick
for we consider you the Soldiers Freind having heard your address to the citizens of Quincy Feb 22 we take this method to thank you for the brave and patriotic sentiments which you expressed on that occasion such sentiments fill the soul of the Soldier with joy we have returned to the field to again battle with an enemy who have Slavery for their platform and those who claim to be fighting for their rights (guess some of them have had theirs) we had a fine time at home for thirty days going to Balls Parties etc and the Ladies God bless them we shall never forget them for their kindness to us only one thing happened to mar the pleasure of our visit that was to find some of our old freinds
denouncing the administration and everything else that was beneficial to our Government But we assure you they are no longer freinds of ours we would rather they were south of our lives than to be enjoying the protection of the Government we are fighting to sustain you may think that we are rather presumtous to write to you but Dick we are a gay set of boys and am vain enough to think you will be glad to hear from us and Dick we want you to do us a little favor (not to have us promoted to Brigadier Generals for we have more now than there is use for) Send us about a dollars worth of stamps remember that we have been up in Gods Country and to use the favorite expression our cash is played out and being within about 40 miles of the Rebs, Paymasters are rather scarce at present so Draw out your sheep skin and send
them along remember that there is a big crowd of us we have 42 of the old boys out of 44 and a new suply of recruits and there aint a cent in the crowd. one of the boys had to press the stamp on this from an Shouldered struffed gentleman but will bring our letter to a close Hoping that you may again (b our?) Bully Govener (which you will if we get a vote)
We are sir With much Respt Yours. For The Union
