Chicago March 22nd 1864
Gov Richard Yates:
Honorable Sir.
To introduce myself I would say that I was of the Committee who Escorted you to the Theatre at time of benefit of "DEarborn Sight Artillery" during your last visit to our City. You may think me very presumptuous, but for a long time I have thought of applying for a position as Pay master in the navy and my object in writing this is to ask a letter from you to the proper Authorities in my behalf. I was in the 3 months service with the 1st Wisconsin Regmt, was in the battle, or rather skirmish of "[rallins?] [Waters?]" the first of the War after "Sumpter". Should have Continued in service but for good & sufficient reasons, I can give good reference as to qualifications both in Chicago & in Wisconsin. I enclose a letter from the President
of a Bank with which I was formerly connected. As to my being [Sound?] on the Administration there is I presume no doubt. I am personally acquainted with Senator Doolittle. Genl Rufus Rm's & some other notables. If consistent with your feelings I should be most happy to receive a favorable response.
Very truly Yours
Saml Brooks.
