Dear Sir
I have received a letter from Genl Grant that it is not necessary to order a Court of Inquiry in my case, and from the President that in the present Exigencies of the service he does not wish me to press the matter now.
Wade of the Committee on Conduct of the War says that no blame attaches to me, & will so report.
I think it unadvisable to do any thing further at this time.
I would advise you to look to the "Palmer" movement for Governor. It is contemplated that he will hold the balance
of power in the Convention & trade off for the Senatorship.
This you of course will not believe but you will find it likely to be done.
Very Truly Yours,
S. A. Hurlbut
