HEAD QUARTERS,
Department of Virginia and North Carolina.
In Field, Jun 25 1864
Dear Sir
I rec'd your letter some time ago but I have been so very unwell that I have scarcely been able to get around and should I not get better soon will be compeled to quit and in that event I will see you & have a talk. You know my feelings towards you there is none I respect
than I do you and no one is more willing to accord you full & ample credit for what you have done this I do on all Occasions while this is true as you know I am peculiarly situated at home this you understand I have not yet made up my mind to make a try for Congress as I doubt seriously wether the game is worth the amunition. At any
rate I will have little to do with the present campaign unless I should get home and find my health improved. I wont promise to pitch in for you. for if I do I will go the whole [figure?] at whatever personal cost or sacrifices. This I am not prepared to promise but I will say that you have my good wishes
and my warmest sympathy in your laudable ambition for preferment. Matters have not yet reached that point that I felt that my time has come to open up. before I do so I will see you and whatever I may do I am confident of receiving first your perfect acquiescence
We are still before this Enemy & I hope Ere long will advance and when we do the result will not be doubtfull So keep good courage.
Let me hear from you oft.
Truly your friend
