Peoria Daily Transcript, Peoria, Ill., Aug 16 1864
Dear Sir/
We have had several conversations with Judge W. P. Kellogg in reference to the Transcripts' support of yourself for U. S. Senator. It Seems that our position has been considered equivocaly, more particularly so, in consequence of a little paragraph, mentioning EB. Washburn in connection with the office. The article was inserted during the absence of both Mr Emery & Mr Andrews, the writer being Wm M W. Fuller, an old resident of Mr Washburn's district and a personal friend and admirer.
We write this letter to assure you that individually and in the Transcript we will support you for the position & at the proper time the latter will take open ground to that Effect. So far
as the Peoria Representative to the Legislature is concerned we think you may rely on him. At present it is policy for us to keep quiet & find how the different parties mentioned in connection with the office Stand affected on the question and choose between them. Stark which joins us in electing two representatives will name one and we can do nothing but advise and influence him after his Election
We prefer communcating with you direct rather than through a third party, for we dont care to have any man say that he can influence us to do that which others cannot, and which has not the Sanction of our judgment
We are, Respectfully, Your Obt Servants
Emery & Andrews
Emery & Andrews, Peoria Ills, Aug 16th 1864
Write in refference to the Transcript supporting the Governor for U.S. Senator. Also give account of an article written by M. W. Fuller a personal friend and ardent admirer of E. B. Washburn mentioning him in connection with that office. They assure their support individually and in the Transcript, at the proper time. The Peoria Representative can be relied on.
