Chicago Ill.
Sept. 4, 1864.
Hon. Richard Yates,
Gov. of Illinois,-
I am told you left the city Thursday night; I got home Friday morning - the day I had fixed upon as falling in best with my interests. What a botch! I cannot say how Long John will regard me. I appeared promptly on the platform after his nomination and gave in my adhesion. I was told last night - by a friend, I suppose - that Wentworth had intimated that he wanted Elliot Anthony to go to the Senate & intimated that I had better not be
a candidate, as I could not overcome such opposition. I answered, that two candidates had just been frightened off the track, and I was not the man to become the third.
I think I can win beyond a doubt.
What did you learn? Let me ask you to write me fully, if you have any points, or advice.
Respectfully, your friend,
Francis A. Eastman
