Pay Department, U.S.A., St. Louis, Mo. Sept 9th 1864

Gov. Richd Yates, Springfield Ills,

Dear Governor.

I arrived last night after a more than two months trip to Little Rock Ark. I found your note of the 7th Aug. I also recd one Letter at Little Rock and answered immediately. I hope you received my reply. I am Exceedingly sorry that I could not be in Ills sooner. And Even more the press of work in our department is great.

Gov. I serve you before all other men. This letter is taken up before a dozen official ones I find by examining Ogle Co. papers that She is all right. Mix and Petrie are the workers there. They you find put Yates ahead of Washburne. It was

thought best on consultation in order to keep Washburne in a place and possibly quiet till after the senatorial Election & return him to Congress again.

I send you the Resolutions passed at the Congressional Convention at Freport. Mix was the Draftsman. Mix is an appointee of Washburnes hand perhaps. The wording as to Washburne Mix is a man thus affected. But I think "The Members from Ogle" in The Legislature will be "All right on Dick."

As to anything further Governor I will be very glad to hear from you.

I Shall be busy a few days till my papers are sent to Washington for this last payment. And then, if At All possible I shall be in Ills a short time at best. In the mean time write me and I will sit up nights and work my good gold quill.

Hoping, Governor, that all may work right both for the honor of Our Country And for your own just and due reward I reman Your Obedient Servant

Wm S Pope
